Eight school children have drowned in Volta Lake after their boat capsized.
According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the deceased was among 20 students traveling by boat from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located.
Twelve students made it to safety by swimming.
The eight deceased, NADMO says comprise five boys and three girls between the ages of five and twelve.
Sene East District Director of NADMO, Ibrahim Wudonyim, told the media that before they arrived at the accident site, some community members and Marine Police had recovered all eight bodies from the Lake.
He explained that the incident happened around 7:00 am on Tuesday and that the boat capsized midway.
The bodies were taken to Atikagome, a fishing community.
The community has been thrown into mourning, shock, and fear as a result of the incident.
