The Ahafo Region’s Asutifi South District has been plunged into mourning following a heinous accident at Ata ne Ata on Saturday that claimed the lives of 11 people.
One of the victims died while receiving treatment at the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem, according to an eyewitness.
Four other people in critical condition are being treated at the same hospital.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday in Ata ne Ata, a farming community on the Hwidiem-Goaso highway.
Enerst Karim, a Wuramuso assemblyman, told the media that the incident occurred when a tricycle carrying the victims as well as some bags of ginger attempted to overtake another one at Ata ne Ata.
He claimed that the tricycle collapsed, throwing both the passengers and the ginger bags into the middle of the road.
Karim explained that an oncoming KIA truck from the Goaso side of the road ran over them, killing 10 and injuring others on the spot.
He went on to say that the victims, mostly from Nkaseim, Kwamo, and Ohiatua, were returning from Obengkrom village, where they had gone to harvest ginger.
Karim added that despite the police holding a number of forums to educate the public about the dangers of using tricycles to transport passengers, the message had gone unheard.
