The government has stated its intention to assist victims of the Akosombo Dam leakage in rebuilding their lives and returning to normalcy.
There has been a rising call for the government to consider temporarily moving the affected individuals to the Saglemi Housing project.
In response to these requests, Information Minister Kojo Oppong stated during a press conference that the government’s urgent priority is to provide critical assistance to the victims.
He went on to say that the Volta Region’s spillage has necessitated the establishment of twenty designated shelters to house those affected by the flooding.
This strategy, he says, is intended to keep their condition from worsening during this trying time.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah also stated that the government intends to assist them in returning to their home areas after the water levels have receded.
“These are our brothers and sisters from various parts of the region, and because of the topography, twenty centres have been established to house people from nearby villages affected by the flooding exercise.”
“The focus is to ensure that the people who have been relocated to these twenty centres are supported with the necessary food, sleeping materials, healthcare, etc, so that their situation does not become more precarious than it is now and then subsequent to that, when the water levels recede, to assist them to go back to their communities.”
