Alan Kyerematen, a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated his intention to compete as an independent candidate in the impending 2024 elections.
Kyerematen’s decision has sent shockwaves through the political scene, since he has been a staunch NPP supporter for many years.
Kyerematen, a long-serving politician, is well-known for his contributions to the NPP and his responsibilities in numerous government posts
Mr Kyerematen, on the other hand, stated his reasons for leaving the party at a news conference in Accra on Monday, September 25.
“Under the circumstances and given the context provided, I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning with immediate effect from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 General Elections, as an Independent Presidential Candidate.”
Kyerematen emphasised his dedication to tackling the country’s critical concerns, such as economic development, job creation, and social welfare. He indicated that his choice to run as an independent candidate was motivated by his conviction that doing so would allow him to better serve the interests of Ghanaians.
His candidature as an independent poses a one-of-a-kind threat to Ghana’s established political system, with the ability to change the political landscape.
Mr. Kyerematen has left the NPP for the second time.
Alan withdrew from the NPP in 2008 in a similar move, feeling bitter over the defeat in the 2007 presidential primary and what he later described as being ignored, but was politically forced and eventually rejoined the party.
Kyerematen’s decision to leave the NPP and run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections signals a watershed point in Ghanaian politics.
