The Police Service has confirmed that 12 officers have been injured and police vehicles damaged due to the Arise Ghana demonstration which commenced on Wednesday, June 28, 2022, at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra.
According to the statement, organisers of the demonstration insisted on using routes leading to the Jubilee House which was contrary to the court orders.
“All attempts to persuade them to comply with the court-approved routes did not yield the expected result. Unfortunately, and without any provocation, the demonstrators began pelting the police with stones” the statement said.
The demonstrators further regrouped and burnt tires on the road around Circle.
“The Police, therefore, had no option but to use tear gas and water cannons to subdue the rioting and restore order. The process is still ongoing,” the police added.
The Police have urged all road users to use alternative routes where possible as steps are taken to disperse the rioting demonstrators.
They have assured the public of the arrest of all involved in the violent demonstration.
