The former Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odoben Brakwa, Hon. Paul Collins Appiah- Ofori has said that individuals who engage in corrupt practices, regardless of their position in the country should be arrested.
“The law does not say an MP, a Council of State member or any other individual holding a position in this country should be set free, when they practice corruption…any person who engages in a corrupt practice at the expense of the country must be arrest and put into prison,” he noted.
In an interview with OilCity Radio in Kwesimintsim-Takoradi, Hon. Appiah-Ofori commended the Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, adding that “the OSP is doing a good job and by prosecting these offenders and bringing them to book will serve as a deterrent to others.”
This comes after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in a recent report, recouped GHS1.047 million from a business owned by Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh, a member of the Council of State.
The money, according to the OSP, is a shortfall in import duties reimbursed to the state.
The investigative report titled, “Report of Investigation into Alleged Commission of Corruption and Corruption Related Offences involving Labianca Group of Companies and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority” also cited Joseph Adu Kyei, a Deputy Commissioner of Customs in charge of Operations, for issuing what it deemed to be an illegal customs advance ruling.
This, according to the report, decreased the benchmark values of the products Labianca Limited imported, resulting in decreased tax liabilities of the company to the state.
