The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has requested that the New Kejetia Market be shuttered for several days until an investigation into Wednesday evening’s fire is conducted.
Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah told media after viewing the area on Thursday morning that roughly 50 stores were hit, with practically all things in them entirely destroyed.
He also asked for the formation of a commission to investigate the conditions that contributed to the fire’s escalation.
Among other things, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah wants the committee to “establish why the sprinkler did not switch on automatically when the fire started and why the smoke detectors did not work effectively.”
The fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m. on March 15, 2023.
This comes only a week after a strong downpour inundated certain portions of the market.
