Voting is underway in the Assin North constituency in the Central Region as over 40, 000 voters go to the polls today, Tuesday, June 27, to elect their next representative in Parliament.
Three candidates are running for the seat: James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
Following the annulment of Mr Quayson’s 2020 parliamentary election, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced a by-election for June 27.
The Supreme Court ordered that Mr Quayson’s name be removed from Parliament’s records after discovering that he held dual citizenship at the time of completing his candidature documents.
Mr Quayson has since been re-nominated for the by-election by the NDC. All of the contenders believe they will win the election.
According to a recent Global Info Analytics poll, Mr Opoku of the NPP has a tiny lead compared to Mr Quayson of the NDC.
The survey, which took place between June 15 and June 20, 2022, revealed that 46.7% of respondents would vote for Mr Opoku, while 45.6% would vote for Mr Quayson.
The remaining 6.9% of those polled were undecided.
On the eve of the by-election, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, met with the leaders of the two major political parties.
The meeting, which took place at Assin State College SHS, aimed to encourage conversation, understanding, and cooperation among political parties and the police force.
