The Minority in Parliament wants Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, to accept its petition during its protest on September 5, 2023.
The Minority had given the Bank of Ghana’s Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his deputies a 21-day deadline to resign, citing concerns about the central bank’s handling of the 60 billion Ghana Cedis losses reported in its 2022 financial statement and the ongoing $250 million new head office project.
the group has decided to protest on September 5 at the headquarters of the Bank of Ghana over the Governor’s and his deputies’ indefinite tenure in office.
Speaking to journalists after a closed-door discussion with the police on demonstration regulations, Bawku Central Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga said they are hoping that the police will relay their demand to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
“When we met with the police, one of the key issues in our demand was that we want the governor to be the one to receive our petition, which is why we must march to the Central Bank building itself so that he can come down and receive the petition himself. And we insisted on that position, so I believe the police will relay our requests to him, and I believe he will make himself available.”
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command invited the Minority on Wednesday, August 23, prior to the September 5 picketing.
The police later voiced dissatisfaction with the protest routes and urged the Minority to change the routes and destination for the picketing, which the service claimed was in the interest of public order, public safety, and the operation of critical services.
