Nine children have drowned in a lake at Faana-Bortianor, an island community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region returning home from school.
According to a report, 12 pupils were crossing the lake in a canoe on their way from school at Wiagoman to Faanaa on Wednesday (10 May 2023).
The canoe was being paddled by one of the school pupils when it capsised midway through the journey resulting in the death of the nine children.
Three children are missing, and there is currently a search for them.
The owner of the canoe is currently in police custody cooperating with the investigation.
Dan Bright Abayateye, Assemblyman of the Botianor Electoral Area stated that the incident has caused the neighbourhood to enter a state of mourning.
He urged stakeholders to provide the neighbourhood with a school building so that future incidences of this kind may be avoided.
“Since there are no schools in the area and the kids must take a boat to get to school. If there is any NGO out there that can come to our aid [it will be very useful],” he said.
