Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a subsidiary of China’s Shandong Gold, intends to construct an airport in northern Ghana to serve the Upper East Region and its own operations.
Cardinal had originally proposed building an airport for its exclusive use in the Talensi District, where it intends to commence gold mining activities in the fourth quarter of 2024, with output expected in the fourth quarter of 2024.
However, the transport ministry persuaded the firm to build an airport because the region currently lacks one.
Cardinal Namdini project manager Steve Ofori-Asamoah revealed the plans during a visit of the mining site with other dignitaries.
Ofori-Asamoah stated that the airfield will be used to carry corporate staff from outside the region to activities in Kumasi, Accra, and Takoradi, as well as to move gold.
According to Ofori-Asamoah, the company’s management is currently waiting for the government to finalise the move.
The miner expects to extract 150 million tonnes of ore in the Talensi District over the course of 15 years, yielding 5 million ounces of gold.
