The Commander of the Tarkwa Prisons, Mr. Ababio Ali has stated that the issue of overcrowding makes it increasingly difficult for inmates to observe the social distancing protocols. This situation he said was a major cause of concern since the country continues to experience an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
The social distancing protocol has been prescribed by health experts as one of surest interventions to prevent the further spread of the novel corona virus.
“Due to the issue of overcrowding, it is difficult for inmates here to observe the social distancing protocol. It is nearly impossible for the inmates not to physically have contact with each other, considering how small the cell rooms here are”.
He, however, stated that other safety protocols such as the wearing of nose mask, and regular hand washing is being practiced by both prison officers and inmates alike. With regards to the availability of PPEs for the Tarkwa Prisons, Mr. Ababio stated that with the help of the Member of Parliament for the area, the Municipal Assembly and other benevolent organizations, the Tarkwa Prisons has received quite a sufficient number of PPEs.
“For the Tarkwa Prisons, I can say that with the support of our Member of Parliament, Honourable George Mireku Duker, the Assembly and other organizations within the Municipality have since donated hand sanitizers, detergents, nose masks and veronica buckets to us. And we are still asking for more of that from individuals and organizations”, he added.
