Mr. Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, Controller and Accountant General, has failed to appear before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Monday, January 29, following his recent defeat in the parliamentary primary.
Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem was scheduled to come before the Committee on Monday to answer key questions, but he was noticeably absent when the meeting began.
Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare notified PAC Chairman James Klutse Avedzi that the Controller and Accountant General would be unable to attend owing to unexpected circumstances.
Despite this explanation, the committee required Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem’s participation and that he answer some important questions.
The Controller and Accountant General sent three deputies as representatives, which were rejected by several committee members.
However, the PAC Chairman, James Klutse Avedzi, issued a definitive finding that the hearing should go forward.
Mr. Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem’s ambitions of becoming an MP were crushed on Saturday when he lost the Akim Swedru parliamentary primaries.
He received 94 votes, compared to 194 for incumbent MP Kennedy Osei and 10 for Okyere Jerome Kwame.
The race in the constituency gained traction after the Controller and Accountant General announced his desire to run for the seat.
While he received some support and encouragement from prominent figures, politicians, religious leaders, and civil society organisations, others criticised his choice, demanding for his resignation or removal from office.
The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) Ghana has sought his immediate removal from office for allegedly violating the Civil Service Act, PNDC Law 327.
Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, filed a lawsuit against Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem on January 10, 2024.
