A bench warrant has been issued by an Accra Circuit Court for the arrest of a lady suspected of collecting GHC100,000 from a businessman in order to get him a Ghana Cocoa Road Contract.
Mercy Lilina Danquah, 38, allegedly failed to keep her commitments after receiving the money.
Danquah, who is accused of defrauding through false pretences, did not appear in court when the case was presented.
As a result, the prosecution, led by Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, sought a bench warrant for her arrest.
The prosecution’s request was granted by the court presided over by Ellen Ofei Ayeh.
The hearing has been rescheduled for October 11, 2023.
The prosecution’s evidence was that Mercy, the defendant, lived in Batsona whereas Bright Asante-Appiah, the complainant, was a businessman who lived in East Legon.
According to the prosecution, the complainant asked Renaissance African Group to help fund his project in May 2021.
According to the prosecution, it was discovered that the complainant didn’t have enough financing throughout the deliberation.
However, Renaissance African Group connected the complainant to the accused at the Octagon Towers, where she introduced herself as the head of the Ghana Mining Sector Road Rehabilitation Secretariat and said she could help him land a $10 million Cocoa Road Contract.
The prosecution asserted that under the pretence of securing the complainant with the contract in September 2021, the accused requested and obtained GHC 100,000 as a contract fee.
It claimed that Mercy broke her word and continued to provide the complainant workouts after receiving the money.
The accused was detained after a complaint was made on July 31, 2021, at the Adabraka Police Station. She later confirmed accepting the complainant’s money while under investigation.
According to the prosecution, the defendant claimed that the money was provided to support the construction of the aforementioned Ghana Mining Sector Road Rehabilitation Secretariat, a new office, in order to facilitate his acquisition of the contract.
Investigation, according to the report, revealed that the accused person had falsely claimed that a Secretariat under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources existed.
The Secretariat was also registered with the department of registrar generals.
Following the start of the case, the aforementioned office, which is serving as the Secretariat and is located at Octagon Towers in Accra, has been locked.
According to the prosecution, the defendant asked for more time to pay back the money.
Mercy refunded GHC10,000 on January 24, 2023, and that amount has been preserved as evidence.
