Former Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) boss Alex Mould and Gavivina Tamakloe, who stood surety for former MASLOC boss Sedinam Tamakloe, have been ordered by the high court to pay GH 5 million as the former MASLOC boss’ bail bond.
Sedinam Tamakloe, who is on trial for willfully causing financial loss to the state, has been absent from court since October 2021 after being granted permission to seek medical treatment outside of the country.
However, on October 22, 2022, the court ordered the two sureties to produce the accused.
Failure to do so resulted in the state filing an application for forfeiture of recognizance, which requires the sureties to pay for the bail bond.
The court did, however, set Tuesday, January 24 as the last adjourned date to hear the motion.
The court also asked the sureties’ lawyers to authenticate a medical report that purported to explain why the former MASLOC boss was not present at the trial.
The court noted that, while the document from a hospital in the United States indicated that the accused had a spinal and eye problem, it did not prove that the accused could not travel to Ghana for medical treatment.
The court also stated that 16 months since the directive for the sureties to produce the accused is sufficient time for the sureties to apply for forfeiture of recognizance.
