The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has shuttered its basic school, according to an official announcement.
The shutdown comes amid continuing industrial action by multiple unions in the education sector.
According to a statement made by KNUST on Thursday (29 January), the shutdown will begin on Tuesday, January 30.
“Following the declaration of industrial action by the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), Senior Staff Association -Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG, and the Ghana Association of University Administrators.”
“I write to inform the University Community and the general public that the KNUST Basic School is being closed down, effective Tuesday 30 January 2024 until further notice,” the announcement said.
At least four teacher unions have launched a statewide strike due to the government’s failure to fulfil their deadline for paying the Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA).
The unions offered the administration a June 30 deadline, which expired.
The unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).
