A boat bound for Kpadzoti, a village in the Krachi West area, capsized on the River Oti, killing eight people.
The catastrophe was allegedly caused by the boat being overloaded with approximately 16 people for a boat built to transport only 8 people.
Kingsley Chamba, a former assemblyman for Karachi Nchumuru, told OilCity Radio that even when life jackets are provided, residents of the community are typically reluctant to use them.
This comes just ten days after five people were killed when a boat transporting mourners overturned on Volta Lake on March 18.
The boat capsized on the lake while transporting mourners from Azizanya to Azizakpe. The five people were killed instantly.
Strong winds are said to have triggered the event, which occurred at 9 a.m. on Saturday
According to eyewitnesses, the event occurred while roughly 100 people were crossing Azizakpe, an island hamlet, on a 40-seater passenger boat.
Three of the five people killed were children under the age of three, as well as two other women. There were no life jackets for any of the passengers.
