The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its presidential primary on Saturday, May 6, 2023, to choose a candidate to represent the party in the 2024 election.
This is contained in a proposed timetable released by the party at its Functional and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday (5 January).
According to the schedule, nominations will be accepted from Monday, February 22 to Wednesday, February 24, 2023.
Forms will be submitted and filed from Monday, March 20, 2023 to Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
The aspirants will be vetted from Monday, March 27 to Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
Following the vetting, aspirants who have issues with the vetting process will have the opportunity to appeal from March 30, 2023 to April 6, 2023, after which the election will take place on May 6, 2023.
A filing fee of GHC500,000 has been proposed, with a nomination fee of GHC30,000 for presidential candidates.
So far, three names have been floated for the presidential race: former President John Dramani Mahama, former Minister of Finance Dr Kwabena Duffuor, and former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu.
Meanwhile, the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has urged all those who have expressed interest in running as a flag bearer or parliamentary candidate to conduct their campaigns in a dignified manner, free of slander, accusations, and personal attacks.
It stated that the overall interest must take precedence over any individual interest, and that the battle for the 2024 election is not about NDC internal politics, but about defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seizing control of government, regardless of who is elected as the flag bearer.
