The deputy director of the Ghana Health Service for the Western region, in charge of Clinical Care, Dr. Atsu Dodor has stated that the total disregard for the social distancing protocol accounts for the surge in COVID-19 cases in the region.
He revealed that most persons in the region continue to flout the social distancing rule, and the wearing of nose mask is not being strictly adhered to when people step out in public.
In an interview on the Jolly Breakfast show with Samuel Kojo Brace, Dr. Atsu Dodor stated “the surge we have so far seen in the COVID-19 cases here (Western Region) is as a result of people’s disregard for the social distancing protocol and the wearing of nose mask. For instance, traders in our markets and customers flout these rules when engaging each other. Such a situation is what is contributing to the sharp raise in our numbers”, he said.
He applauded the decision of local authorities to close down major markets within the Sekondi-Takoradi and Effia-Kwesimintsim area to stem the rate of community infections, as the markets were high-risk areas for potential infections.
Dr. Atsu pleaded with all persons in the region to strictly adhere to the social distancing protocols in their interactions with each other, and make the wearing of nose mask a habit during this period.
