The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, has slammed the 30% increase in base pay for public employees, claiming that it will have a huge impact on the government’s budget.
Following a series of negotiations with organized labor, the government agreed to increase base pay by 30%.
The group had previously demanded a 60% raise to compensate for the difficult economic conditions.
Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, stated that the payment will begin on January 1, 2023.
In a statement to the media, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta stated that while the increase will have an impact on the budget, the government is committed to ensuring a peaceful labor environment.
“This will have an impact on the budget, but I am confident that increased productivity and the commitment we have made to each other will ensure peace in this country as we address pension and labor issues.”
Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), assured the government that they would work together to increase the country’s revenue base to aid in its development.
