President Akufo-Addo has restated his commitment to bringing an end to illicit mining, emphasising that the government’s efforts to combat galamsey are unmatched in Ghana’s history.
“We are here to destroy galamsey, and it will undoubtedly be eradicated,” he stated. “No government has demonstrated such tenacity in the fight against galamsey.”
As part of his four-day business tour to the Ashanti Region, the president paid a courtesy call on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace.
There has been a massive push to combat the illicit mining threat, which has ruined numerous forest areas and water bodies.
Security forces apprehended suspected Chinese illegal miner Aisha Huang and at least four other accomplices, who are facing charges of violating the country’s mining rules.
It seems that the government is not exonerating its officials as well.
Yaw Danso, the district chief executive for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region, is also under investigation for his role in illicit mining.
He has since been suspended.
