The Upper East Region’s Talensi Mining Communities Initiative (TAMCI), a civil society group, has reiterated its demands for financial compensation for the families of the 16 miners who perished in the district’s Gbane mining pit in 2019.
The NGO stated that the deceased’s dependents had been struggling to make ends meet on their own without receiving any kind of payment.
It urged the government and the Minerals Commission to make sure that the families of the deceased received fair compensation.
It should be remembered that on January 23, 2019, an explosion inside the mining concession of the former Shaanxi Mining Company Limited resulted in the inhalation of poisonous gas, which caused sixteen miners to pass away (now Earl International Gold Limited).
Although the Company claimed the miners were working at the Bantama mining group illegally and denied any wrongdoing, the Minerals Commission’s investigations found the company guilty and assessed a US$40,000 fine.
In the meantime, the Yenyaya and Pubortaaba Mining Groups, who hired the Shaanxi Mining Company to provide support services, were also fined US$10,000 for failing to notify the Gbane Community of blasting times.
