Ghanaian France-based footballer, Alexander Djiku has been named the Footballer of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards 2022.
The event which occurred on Saturday, July 2, 2022, celebrated players in grand style.
Alexander Djiku was named Best Player of the Year, beating his colleagues and taking the title away from Ghana National Team captain Andrew Ayew, who won it last year.
Shortlisted for the Footballer of the Year category were Deputy Ghana captain and Arsenal star Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey of Leicester City, Mohammed Salisu of Southampton, and Jojo Wollacott who plays in the English lower division.
The 27-year-old in his acceptance speech expressed his delight in winning the award and thanked his teammates and family for their assistance.
“I am happy and grateful to receive this award as the Ghana Player of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards. It’s been a good year with my club, we finished sixth in the championship,” Djiku said.
“The World Cup qualification is something I take pride in. I am happy to make my family proud. I sincerely want to thank Strasbourg and my country Ghana for this award,” he added.
The Ghana Football Awards scheme, which has become the most coveted in the football world, honours footballers who have accomplished extraordinary feats in the previous year.
