The Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) has stated that the government and its stakeholders have demonstrated enough commitment and leadership against the galamsey menace.
“For example, the annual average turbidity levels at the Daboase headworks on the Pra river has worsened from 1,180 in 2020, 2,588 inn 2021 and 2,634 in 2022,” a statement from MCAG said.
The media organisations therefore, outlined radical measures that is needed to be adopted by the government that will result to a positive change.
“Order all small scale and surface mining activities to stop immediately to allow our water bodies and forests to begin to be restored and strategize a way to bring sanity to all surface mining activities in Ghana.
“Sack all MCE/DCE in whose areas of jurisdiction illegal mining has taken place and still continues based on evidence on the ground,” MCAG said.
They therefore called on the public, civil society organizations to collaborate with the media to help eradicate this menace.
“Losing this war is not an option. Irresponsible and unsustainable mining is an existential threat and should be countenanced,” it added.
