Some students on Government of Ghana scholarships administered by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat are said to be stranded in the United Kingdom (UK) due to a delay in the payment of their fees and stipends.
Some students are said to have been expelled, while others are being pursued by their schools and landlords for failing to pay their rent.
According to sources, some of the students have not received their stipend for more than 8 months, worsening their situation.
Others have had to overstay because they cannot afford to return to Ghana. Some claim to have been sued by their landlords for failure to pay rent.
The students are pleading with the government to rescue them as soon as possible.
Some Ghanaians have already started an online petition, https://www.change.org/p/rescue-stranded-ghanaian-students-in-the-uk?redirect=false to force the Ghanaian government to come to their aid.
“The Government of Ghana should act immediately to rescue these stranded citizens and to save the nation from disgrace,” a write-up on the online platform captured.
