Some groups affiliated to the NPP in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality have called on the President to review his decision to terminate the appointment of Gilbert Kennedy Asmah as the Municipal Chief Executive, and withdraw Benjamin Kesse as the new nominee as Municipal Chief Executive for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.
The groups made up of Concern Citizens of Tarkwa, Concern Youth of Wassa-Fiase, polling station members, former assembly members and some party members say they are surprised by the sacking of Hon. Gilbert Kennedy Asmah. They contend that his stellar leadership is what has brought the Municipality to the limelight, and therefore cannot understand why he was relieved of his post.
In a joint press conference in Tarkwa today, the groups stated “The Hon. MCE has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that a municipality which had occupied the 79th position nationally in the 2016/2017 District League Table assessment of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD –Ghana), performed creditably to move to 7th position in the 2017/2018 assessment, under his leadership. In addition, the Municipal Assembly was also 5th across the entire country under the Local Government performance Management Assessment of MMDAs in 2019, and 1st in the Western Region through his efforts”.
“Hon. K. D. Asmah proactively ensured the effective supervision for the implementation of His Excellency, the President’s prudent economic, social and infrastructure development policies, programmes and projects in the Municipality to the benefit of majority of the people.”
Bosco-Bosco Narkah, a former Constituency secretary, who led the group, said “since Hon. Gilbert Kennedy Asmah was sworn into office in 2017, he has suffered a series of opposition, threats, humiliation, physical and verbal attacks from some internal members of his own New Patriotic Party NPP that he once led as the Constituency Chairman before becoming the Municipal Chief Executive. These acts of vindictiveness are often orchestrated to satisfy their personal greed and selfish interest.”
He added that “even before this unfortunate incident, a group associated with the new MCE Nominee; Benjamin Kesse and Member of Parliament had fiercely and consistently threatened to oust Hon. Asmah from his office with macho men, all because the MCE doesn’t buy into their create, loot and share mantra.”
