In the upcoming weeks, the International Monetary Fund will deploy another delegation to Ghana as the country battles to negotiate a bailout plan.
After the Akufo-Addo administration declared its plan to return to the IMF for a bailout, a staff team travelled to Ghana in July for preliminary talks.
Ghana is seeking a $3 billion package from the fund.
At a recent media event, Gerry Rice, the Director of Communications of IMF said:
“Ghana has, as you probably know, requested a program from the IMF. We had an IMF staff team in Accra in July 2022 to begin initial discussions with the Ghanaian authorities. And we characterized that mission as constructive, kick-started the process, and laid the groundwork for engagement, which now continues.”
“Our Mission Chief for the IMF also recently visited Accra, again, to meet with key counterparts. And we’re hopeful of another visit in the coming weeks. I don’t have a date for you, but it will surely be in the coming weeks,” he added.
The Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, stated earlier this month that an agreement between Ghana and the IMF should be negotiated and completed before the end of the year.
The IMF is being consulted to assist the nation in navigating the economic crisis it is currently experiencing, which was made worse by the coronavirus outbreak and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
