A nine-member delegation of Members of Parliament is currently in Washington DC, United States of America (USA), for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring meetings, as the government seeks $3 billion in assistance.
The delegation is part of a team that includes Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Ernest Addison, and other members of Ghana’s economic management team.
At the meetings, the group is expected to engage with commercial, bilateral, and multilateral creditors in order to persuade the IMF board of directors to approve the deal.
Speaking on the essence of the lawmakers at the meeting, the head of the delegation of MPs, the Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, said it is important there is adequate legislation to ensure government implements the funds it receives from the IMF.
Meanwhile, the IMF has stated its willingness to continue putting pressure on wealthier countries to write off poorer countries’ debt.
The Fund stated that debt restructuring and cancellation will be the focus of its spring meeting in Washington, DC.
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, told journalists ahead of the meeting that the majority of poor countries are in distress and require debt forgiveness from wealthier nations.
