Movie Producer and Actor, Fiifi Coleman has said that he spent almost GHC7,000 to get sound for his first-ever theatre play “Caution! Women at Work.
“To do your own production at the National Theatre you will have to rent your own lights, your own sound; it cost me almost GHC7,000 to get sound in the National Theatre, that is the theatre we have.” He fumed
“It is so pathetic that the National Theatre had me providing me a walkie-talkie. Walkie-talkies are one of the least things you can find at the National Theatre, so when I am calling for the services during the play like ‘lower the curtain, open the curtain’ I need to dial someone’s number to get it done because there is no walkie-talkie,” he added
According to the actor, the government’s initiative to build new theatrical centers without renovating old ones is a misplaced priority.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based radio Hitz Fm Mr. Coleman mentioned several obstacles he had dealt with during his theatre play.
“When I did my last play, I bought mosquito repellent myself to spray the entire building before the guests could come in because it was so unbearable; and it’s coming out of my pocket,” he lamented.
Describing the issue as disturbing and pathetic, he urged the government to focus on renovating old theatrical centers rather than building new ones.
In May, the Fiifi Coleman Productions thrilled Ghanaians with his first-ever theatre play, “Caution! Women at Work”, acted by an all-female cast.
