The husband of Yellow Sisi Special Waakye, a well-known waakye restaurant in Oyibi, has lamented the prospect of his traumatized wife returning to her business following an alleged food poisoning incident.
The traumatized husband, who spoke to OilCity Radio under the condition that his identity not be revealed, said, “My wife can’t do anything bad to her family or her customers because we eat the same food whenever it’s prepared.”
“After eating the food, my wife, one of her saleswomen, and my daughter also went to the hospital for treatment. She will never do anything to hurt her customers, he said.
The Foods and Drugs Authority reports that one person was confirmed dead after checks from medical facilities in the catchment area and that 53 people were hospitalized.
The deceased man was the landowner of the plot of property where the well-known waakye joint at Bush Canteen at Oyibi is situated.
“My husband ate the food on Friday [January 20, 2023], and he was subsequently rushed to the hospital a day after that, where he was pronounced dead after a short while,” the deceased man’s wife said.
Yellow Sisi’s husband revealed that “none of my wife’s attempts to persuade the landlord to seek medical attention as soon as the situation occurred were heeded.”
“It is very sad that the landlord passed. My wife did all she could to convince him to visit the hospital, but he declined. His death has left my wife and I disturbed but all we can say is sorry” he added.
Some victims of the alleged food poisoning said the timely medical attention saved their lives.
Another victim, Emmanuel Boateng, indicated that he resorted to palm oil and charcoal concoction after he was told the hospital beds at Valley View University were fully occupied.
“After taking the charcoal concoction, I vomited everything in my stomach. I feel better now, but I doubt if I would ever buy cooked food from outside again” he said.
After samples of the stew and shito were taken, the police and the FDA launched an investigation to determine the cause and next steps.
Since then, the restaurant has been closed until further notice.
The family’s main source of income, food vending, will continue to be a challenge for them to manage in the coming weeks, according to Yellow Sisi’s husband.
