As the entire health sector in Ghana struggles to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, one huge challenge they are grappling with is the inadequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPEs). All hospitals, clinics and health centres are calling on all stakeholders to support with PPEs.
To this call, the Member of Parliament for the Essikadu-Ketan Constituency, Hon Joe Ghartey has responded positively by donating PPEs and other items to the Holy Child Hospital, Fijai.
The PPEs included five thousand (5000) pieces of surgical masks, forty (40) each of medical safety goggles, shoe covers, head nets, safety goggle, nose masks, nose aprons, surgical gloves, disposable aprons, hand sanitizers, two (2) boxes of liquid soaps and tissues, two (2) thermometer guns and twenty (20) cartons bottled water.
This donation is the second time the MP is donating to the facility to help it fight the COVID-19 pandemic that is wreaking havoc across the globe.
The Western Regional Organizer of the NPP, Abdul Ganiwu, who presented the items on behalf of Hon Joe Ghartey, said the MP who also serves as the Railways Minister donated the times in response to a call placed to him by the facility to come to its aid in these difficult times.
“The Minister received a distress call and in less than 24 hours, he has acted on the call for help. Though he is busy with other schedules, he decided that we should go ahead with the presentation to the hospital which is in his constituency. He has been doing this to several entities since this pandemic began.
“This is the second time the Minister is giving out to this facility and in a prompt manner as his contribution to protecting our frontline health workers,” Abdul Ganiu said whilst presenting the items to the Medical Superintendent of the facility, Dr. Sylvester Ackah Fameye.
Dr. Sylvester Ackah Fameyeh, who was grateful to the MP for the PPEs, said the items have come at the right time since their budget could not contain the purchase of PPEs.
“Some of the challenges we have had is the acquisition of PPE. As we know, this COVID-19 came with nobody having an idea about it and so no facility had planned for it. So when it happened, the budget that we already have for the year couldn’t contain it. The government brought us some but it wasn’t enough so we believe this kind gesture that the MP has done will go a long way to help us in our fight against this COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
Dr Fameye reiterated that these items will help the personnel of the hospital to protect themselves whilst attending to the increasing number of people who come to the facility for health care.
“People have been visiting the facility because in the midst of COVID-19 people also have other conditions like diabetes who need to take their regular medications so they have been coming and this would help us protect ourselves, hence we are grateful to the MP,” he stated.
