In preparation for the by-election in Kumawu scheduled for Tuesday, Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare has met with the leaders of both the opposition National Democratic Congress and the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The IGP reportedly cautioned both political parties to monitor their followers before, during, and after Tuesday’s by-election, stressing that any sort of improper behaviour will not be tolerated.
Following the passing of the incumbent Philip Basoah in March of this year, the Electoral Commission will hold a by-election for the Kumawu constituency on Tuesday, May 23.
The two major political parties, NPP and NDC are vying for the seat.
Prominent political party bigwigs in the NPP and NDC have increased efforts in their attempt to guarantee their candidate wins the seat as the hotly awaited by-election in Kumawu is poised to take place in about 24 hours.
After several roads in the constituency that had been abandoned for years were fixed, the NDC accused the NPP of purchasing votes ahead of the by-election. In the constituency, other significant initiatives have been started.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday encouraged voters in the Kumawu constituency to vote massively for the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate.
The two independent contestants have also pledged to pull a surprise.
As a result of the by-election, a large security presence has been established in Kumawu.
Owing to the large number of security officers who have been stationed there ahead of the by-election, Kumawu is under constant surveillance.
The four candidates are Ernest Yaw Anim of the NPP, Kwasi Amankwaa of the NDC, and two independents both going by the name of Kwaku Duah.
