Akoto Ampaw, one of Ghana’s most famous private legal practitioners, has died.
The human rights activist and anti-corruption advocate is claimed to have died today, October 20, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
The cause of his death is presently unknown, but social media is flooded with condolences from Ghanaians, including legal practitioners, eulogising the legal luminary.
During the 2020 election petition, Mr. Apaw was the principal lawyer for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Mr Ampaw, known as ‘Che Che’ during his days at the University of Ghana, was also a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team in the 2013 Electoral Petition.
He works as an associate at Akufo-Addo’s law company, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.
Lawyer Ampaw has a stellar reputation in the legal community, particularly for advocating human rights causes and fair justice.
He holds an LL.B. from the University of Ghana and a B.L. from the Ghana School of Law.
Among other things, he specialised in commercial law, business law, industrial law, litigation, constitutional and human rights law, media law, labour law, and investment law.
Akoto Ampaw, a human rights activist recently joined forces with other individuals and civil society organisations to protest the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill presently being debated in Parliament.
He voted against the bill, which was supported by a Private Member’s Motion headed by Ningo Prampram MP Sam George.
