Liverpool has confirmed a complete signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez for an undisclosed fee of around £64 million, with a further £21 million in add-ons.
Nunez’s terms of his transfer means that he could become Liverpool’s record signing, with the fee exceeding the £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk.
The 22-year-old striker, scored 34 times in 41 appearances across all competitions for Benfica last season.
Prior to joining Liverpool, the Uruguayan international was linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid, but according to reports, his first choice has always been Liverpool.
Manchester United was reportedly interested in signing Nunez, who cost Benfica 24 million euros (£20.5 million) when he signed from Almeria in 2020.
The striker bagged 26 goals in the Primera Liga last season while also managing four assists.
In 2021-22, the striker, who has 11 caps for Uruguay, scored 26 goals in 28 league games, 25 of which came in the 24 league games in which he started.
The now-former Benfica striker is Liverpool’s first true striker signing since the arrival of Dominic Solanke from Chelsea, so expectations are high.
