The Central Business District (CBD) of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis will be closed down from Thursday 28th May, 2020.
This is as a result of the disregard for social distancing protocols at the markets. Putting in place measures to ensure that there is enough spacing between the market women, the local authorities relocated those at the peripherals of the market circle to the Jubilee Park in Takoradi.
Since the end of last week, some of the traders who were relocated to the Jubilee Park moved back to the peripherals of the Market Circle, citing slow business at the Jubilee Park as the reason for their relocation back to the Market Circle.
The authorities have therefore taken a drastic decision to close down all major markets in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis from Thursday.
Prior to this decision, the Information Service Department (ISD) issued caution to traders at the market over the total disregard for the social distancing protocol. The closure of the market, is being considered as a means of reducing the rate of community spread of COVID-19 in the metropolis,as it is considered one of the covid-19 epicenters in the region.
In one of the COVID-19 addresses by President Nana addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he commended the local authorities in Sekondi-Takoradi for the novel initiative to relocate the traders to the Jubilee Park and also thanked the traders for adhering to the social distancing protocol.
