The Western Region President of the Ghana Journalists Association Chapter, Mr. Moses Akrobeto has called on the government to consider media houses in the distribution of its stimulus package of GHS600 million, as means to cushion businesses owning to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Akrobeto imitated that media houses rely heavily on advertising revenues, which has dwindled since the country started recording cases of COVID-19 and that has greatly affected the smooth operations of media houses across the country.
” Media houses rely on advertising revenues to operate effectively, and since the country starting experiencing covid-19 cases. Media houses have seen a drastic shortfall in terms of advertising revenues. As many businesses tend now to use social media and infographics in this time for promotional activities. Such a situation has pushed some media houses to either forfeit or pay half salaries to workers”.
In addition, Mr. Akrobeto stressed the need for the media to benefit from the stimulus package, as it would prevent the possible collapse of most media houses, and eventually avert mass job losses within the ink fraternity.
