Parliament is debating President Akufo-nomination Addo’s of four Supreme Court nominees.
The House has already approved two of them, Barbara Ackah-Yensu and Samuel Adibu Asiedu.
In his letter to Parliament last July, the President stated that the appointments had gone through the Judicial Council as well as the Council of State.
However, there is some disagreement about the remaining nominees whose approval is still pending.
Their names are Ernest Yao Gaewu and George Kingsley Koomson.
According to the Minority, Justice Gaewu’s previous experience as a Parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disqualifies him from such a position.
Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase, insisted that his approval would reflect poorly on the House.
“When you set a bad precedent, tomorrow it becomes the yardstick for others to make this same demand,” he said on the floor on Friday.
On the other hand, the opposition MPs are holding back George Koomson’s approval because “he just joined the appeal court.”
“He also joined to meet so many senior colleagues,” he told the House.
If these two nominees are confirmed, he told the Speaker, “what we are doing to this country is simply telling our judges to be sycophants.”
Meanwhile, Ejisu MP John Kumah says he is satisfied with the judges’ ability to carry out their responsibilities.
If the impasse continues, the House is expected to put the approval to a secret ballot.
