Members of Parliament are currently voting on the fate of newly appointed ministers and deputies by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The House is divided after the Appointments Committee was unable to reach an agreement on the nominees, and their approval was referred to the plenary for a final decision.
Voting was postponed for a while due to process disagreements.
At a press conference in Parliament, the Minority Caucus stated that all 137 of its members are present and that voting to approve or reject the nominees must take place today.
“We want the voting today, Friday, March 24, 2023, and not any other day. We urge those on the Majority side to return to Parliament immediately, so we vote,” Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson told the Parliamentary press corps.
Since the announcement of the nominees, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed members of the Minority group on the Appointment Committee not to approve the nominees, describing their appointments as an insensitive move that would increase the government’s expenditure in the midst of an economic crisis.
K.T Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has been nominated as Minister for Trade and Industry, with Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, serving as his deputy.
Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, has also been appointed Minister of Food and Agriculture.
Stephen Asamoah Boateng was appointed Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
