Following threats from the group to go on strike over the telecommunication networks’ failure to pay monthly commissions on time, the management of Mobile Money Limited has started conversations with the representatives of the four Mobile Money Associations.
Evans Otumfuo, the general secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, told OilCity Radio that MTN had given a deadline of two to three months to address the issues raised.
Earlier this week, MTN’s delayed commission payments were the subject of complaints from mobile money agents.
“We spoke with Mobile Money Limited’s administration. Regarding our worries, their side of the story, and the plans they are making to address them, there was an acknowledgement. Therefore, it currently just serves as feedback to the issues we have encountered.”
The group has acknowledged the feedback, he said, but has not yet decided whether to agree with it or not.
However, he added, “at the association management level, we have not yet formally communicated back to them.”
The Mobile Money Agents Network, which consists of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Northern Momo Agents, ABAG, and Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, additionally threatened to impose fees for some services they currently provide to clients without charge.
The organisation claims that their capacity to function effectively is being hampered by delayed commission payments, some of which are more than a month past due.
They described how they had made several unsuccessful attempts to address their concerns.
The group suggests capping cash-out commission shares at 50% and increasing the cap commission from 1,000 Ghana cedis to 3,000 Ghana cedis.
