The Electoral Commission of Ghana has been sued over the impending restricted voter registration drive by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s main opposition party, and four other parties.
The parties claimed in their writ that the election administration body’s restriction of the centers for the exercise to just its district offices was illegal and arbitrary.
The other parties are; The Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LGP), the All People’s Congress (APC), and the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
The parties are asking the Supreme Court to rule that the EC’s decision to conduct the 2023 limited/continuous voter registration at the district offices of the EC rather than conducting the same on the basis of electoral areas “will result in voter suppression, particularly in rural constituencies of the country and is thus unconstitutional as it violates the rights of first-time voters.”
According to the EC’s timetable, the restricted voter registration period will begin on Tuesday (12 September 2023) and end on Monday (2 October).
Registration is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. each day and end at 5:00 p.m.
