The National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executives will meet with their Members of Parliament later today, following the party’s leadership change in the legislative chamber.
The meeting had been scheduled for January 31, 2023, but it was cancelled due to an intervention by the party’s Council of Elders.
The meeting was later rescheduled for today, Monday, February 6, 2023, in Parliament.
The meeting comes in the aftermath of the Minority’s leadership reshuffle, which saw Haruna Iddrisu removed as a leader and replaced by Cassiel Ato-Forson.
Meanwhile, Abdul Jahlil Ateku, a political scientist, says the meeting between the party leadership and the minority caucus is an opportunity for all issues related to the change in leadership to be addressed amicably.
“Looking at the situation, the party leadership argues that they had a consultation with people who say there was none. I think that this is an opportunity to iron out the differences. That is the most important thing for them now. They discuss the issues and get the support of the new leadership.”
The meeting is expected to explain the reasons for the reshuffle to the caucus and gain the support of all disgruntled Minority MPs.
Following a reshuffle of its leadership by the NDC’s national executives, there has been a schism among group members.
As part of the leadership changes, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle replaced Ketu North MP, James Klutse Avedzi as the Deputy Minority Leader, while Kwame Governs Agbodza replaced Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak as the Minority Chief Whip.
Despite the uproar that greeted changes in the NDC’s leadership in Parliament, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the NDC, said the party is not fragmented.
According to him, the NDC remains united, and the majority of NDC members have welcomed the changes.
Some MPs signed a petition opposing the party’s decision due to a lack of consultation. Another MPs petitioned the NDC leadership to ignore calls to reverse the reshuffling.
