The new Constitutional Instrument (CI) being supported by the Electoral Commission (EC), according to the majority in parliament, won’t prevent Ghanaians from voting in the general elections of 2024.
The EC and its brand-new C. I want to register voters on the voter’s register using the Ghana Card as the source document.
Speaking to the media, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, said that the new policy intends to sanitize the voting process.
“This is a system that has come to sanitise and purify our system. There are various institutions which recognise the integrity of the National Identification Authority and indeed the Ghana Cards and have resorted to the use of the Ghana Cards,” he said.
The EC wants to make the Ghana card the only form of identification accepted for voter registration through the introduction of a new constitutional provision.
The Minority, which opposes the EC’s action, also questions the NIA’s ability to provide Ghana cards to all applicants who have registered for them.
