The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be flying all of its flags at half-mast following the death of one of its stalwarts, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei.
Dr. Akoto Osei, a prominent NPP member and former Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, died on Monday, March 20, 2023.
The NPP expressed their condolences to Akoto Osei’s family and friends.
The late former Minister of State for Finance was characterised by the party as a “renowned statesman.”
It said he served the country “with distinction as a Minister of State at the Finance Ministry during the Kufour administration, and later as a Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation in the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration. The late distinguished banker, as he was known to all, embodied humility, dedication and selflessness in his service to Party and country.”
“The Party extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and also commiserates with the rest of the nation for the painful loss of this illustrious citizen. In honour of his memory, the NPP directs that all Party flags at the national headquarters and in the respective regions and constituencies be flown at half-mast for the next seven days.”
Dr. Akoto Osei served as a Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency for 16 years and Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-first Addo’s term, from 2017 to 2021.
In May 2003, Osei was appointed deputy minister of Finance and Economic Planning and served as the government’s chief economic adviser.
Upon the death of then-Minister Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, he was promoted to substantive Minister for Finance and Economic Planning.
He held that position until January 6, 2009, when the administration was handed over to the National Democratic Congress, which had won the General Elections in 2008.
After being nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo and undergoing vetting in Ghana’s parliament, Osei was sworn in as Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in February 2017.
The Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation was established to analyse, monitor, and prepare review summits and forums in accordance with the government’s policy on reviewing the work of its own ministries.
President Nana Akufo-Addo selected Anthony Akoto Osei to his cabinet of nineteen ministers in May 2017.
The names of the 19 ministers were presented to Ghana’s Parliament and proclaimed by the then-Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.
As a Cabinet minister, Anthony Akoto Osei was a member of the president’s inner circle and assisted in crucial decision-making operations in the country.
