The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will begin nominations for individuals seeking to represent the party in seats with incumbent Members of Parliament on Wednesday, December 20.
The party has set January 27, 2024, as the date for parliamentary primaries in seats with incumbent MPs.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi Television, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Prof. Haruna Mohammed, said all is set for the picking of forms on Wednesday.
“The party has taken the necessary steps to develop timelines and forms for filing, and forms are ready and will be dispatched to all affected constituencies for sitting members of parliament on December 20 for prospective candidates to pick. Various election bodies are known, and all of the instructions in the forms are clear. We will also send a floppy copy of the album to the elections committee and all constituencies this week so that they may share it with anyone who wishes to run in our party’s parliamentary primary. The screening committees that are being formed will be revealed immediately after the forms are received on December 25.”
Prof. Mohammed also stated that the party’s restriction on any campaign efforts for the budget’s approval remains in effect, as parliament is currently deliberating on budget appropriations for various sectors.
“The instruction is that campaigns will start immediately after nominations are opened for people to pick nominations, so the statement still holds that campaigns in those constituencies are withheld and stopped so that this will give room for government business to go on and also give fairgrounds for everybody to participate.”
