The ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee and National Council will meet today to decide when to hold the party’s presidential and parliamentary primaries.
The meeting will also reveal a date for the start of the nomination process for both elections.
The absence of many Council members caused the highly anticipated meeting to be moved from January 31 to today.
According to reports from the Council, the party has set November 2023 for the election of its presidential candidate, January 2024 for the election of parliamentary candidates for districts where NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) are currently in office and April 2024 for districts where there are no NPP MPs currently in office.
The NPP, however, claimed in a statement that the above timelines were inaccurate and that dates had not yet been finalized.
Alan Kyerematen, a former trade and industry minister, has declared his intention to run for the NPP’s flagbearer position. Dr. Akoto Afriyie, a former minister of agriculture, and Boakye Agyarko, a former minister of energy, have both announced their intention to run against him.
Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former member of parliament for the Mampong Constituency, officially declared his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership when nominations are opened on Wednesday, February 1.
The former legislator stated that a preliminary analysis by his team, along with advice from some party elders, psyched him to bring on board his expert knowledge and values to retain political power.
