The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that nominations for the vacant Kumawu parliamentary seat will be opened from Tuesday, April 11, 2023 until Friday, April 14, 2023.
Interested candidates can purchase and file nomination forms from the Constituency Party Office.
The party will select a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election on Sunday, April 23, 2023. The dates were confirmed during the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council meetings on Monday, April 3, 2023.
The NPP has also approved detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election, which will soon be made available to stakeholders.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared the Kumawu Parliamentary seat vacant on Friday, March 31, 2023, following the death of Philip Basoah on March 28, 2023.
The late Kumawu MP died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Friday, March 24, 2023, after being discovered unresponsive in his chamber. He was immediately transported to the hospital for medical attention but sadly passed on.
Speaker Bagbin announced that the Electoral Commission had been notified of the MP’s death, and a by-election will be held within the next ninety (90) days, as required under Section 3 of the EC’s Amendment Act 1996 ACT 52.
The late Mr. Basoah was described as “a gentle and astute politician whose contributions to the party, constituents, and the development of Ghana through his work in Parliament cannot be overemphasized.”
