Read moreHenry Quartey, the Greater Accra regional minister has on Tuesday (1 February) commissioned thousands of young people made up of officials from various local assemblies and security officers to implement by-laws on sanitation and maintain discipline in the region.
More than 5,000 national service personnel have been deployed for the “operation clean your front page” campaign in the Greater Accra Region.
The initiative launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in October last year is part of the government’s plan to rid the capital off filth and also decongest the various Central Business areas.
The 10-day exercise is beginning today (1 February) with a sensitisation exercise by the national service persons across the region.
Speaking to the press at a short ceremony held at the Independence Square earlier today, Quartey indicated that the exercise is not to deprive hawkers and traders of their livelihoods but to instill discipline and ensure their safety.
He said: “It is not to deprive those who help us in the informal sector of their livelihoods. This exercise is rather going to ensure their security and wellbeing. Lawlessness and indiscipline are beginning to take over the region, and we want all of us to get involved to ensure that we create the right environment.
“…People travel out on holidays, and they walk around, on grass, and as they go to countries where systems work and citizens respect the laws, they see the difference. Why can’t we do that in our country?”
Also, he revealed that his outfit has secured funding to recruit and train about 3,500 individuals who will be deployed across the city to sustain the initiative.
“This is the capital city, this is a cosmopolitan city, and we have to make sure that this works. We have clearance from the Ministry of Finance, we are recruiting close to 3,500 people to be trained and deployed onto the streets to ensure strict adherence, compliance and implementation of the by-laws,” he added.
