The Minister for Communication and digitalisation, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has stated that over 12 million people have undertaken the SIM card registration exercise.
“Over 12 million Ghanaians have linked their Ghana Card to their SIM cards. This shows that a lot of us understand the need for this exercise.”
This she said at the Ashanti Regional Consumer Forum on telecommunication services in Kumasi yesterday, July 20, 2022.
Hon Owusu-Ekuful cautioned that the ongoing SIM card exercise deadline slated for July 31, 2022, will not be extended.
“I take this opportunity to urge all those who have not registered or are yet to link their SIM cards to do so the deadline of July 31 is a few days away and will not be extended,” she said.
“The SIM card registration exercise is one of the consumer-centered initiatives which has the key objective of creating a safe and secure environment for you to be able to use communication services with no fear of any cyber-attack,” Owusu-Ekuful added.
The exercise is said to aid national security agencies in tracking and tracing criminals who use their SIM cards to commit crimes.
Following the initial difficulties with the exercise, the deadline for SIM card registration slated for March 31 has been extended to July 31.
Earlier this year, the head of Consumer and Corporate Affairs of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Nana Dufie Badu noted that the extended deadline would allow everyone to register their SIM cards.
“I would like to reassure subscribers and the general public that there’ll be the opportunity for everybody to register their SIM. The NCA and the ministry of communications have been continuously monitoring the exercise. It is the hope of the ministry and the NCA that every SIM user will be able to register their SIM.”
Meanwhile, the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs): MTN, AirtelTigo, Glo, and Vodafone have worked to reduce and eliminate the long queues at their offices.
It would have been great if you enquired about the total subscribers for your readers to know the number of people left to be enrolled besides you are doing a great job.
