The Parliamentary Friendship Association-Iran of the Parliament of Ghana has extended its condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and its citizens following the death of President Seyed Dr. Ebrahim Raisi.
The 63-year-old president, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other high-ranking officials, tragically perished in a helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19. The accident occurred in Iran’s remote northwest near Jolfa, a city bordering Azerbaijan, approximately 375 miles (600 km) northwest of Tehran. President Raisi had been traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.
Earlier that day, Raisi was in Azerbaijan to inaugurate a dam alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. This dam is the third joint project on the Aras River between the two nations. Despite recent tensions, including a 2023 attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran and Azerbaijan’s diplomatic ties with Israel, the visit marked an important collaborative effort.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, the Parliamentary Friendship Association-Iran of the Parliament of Ghana expressed profound condolences to the people of Iran, Ambassador Bijan Gerami, and the Iranian Embassy in Accra.
