The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has said the hung Parliament system, is one of the best ways to hold the executive branch of government accountable.
The public has differing views on the efficacy of the eighth parliament, as some claim that it has not produced the desired results.
Alban Bagbin argued in favour of the balancing system in Parliament when speaking to members of the Awudome Traditional Council in Accra.
“It is the decision of Parliament that can really hold the executive arm in power account to Ghanaians the money and resources they use. How are we utilising it to the benefit of Ghanaians? If we don’t have such a Parliament that can check this, there will be chaos in the system,” the Speaker of Parliament said.
Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has asked Ghanaians to abstain from voting in any future hung parliaments.
The Bekwai MP thinks that given the circumstances, the current legislature is less effective than the seventh Parliament.
In order to give one political party a lopsided majority in the House, he urges Ghanaians to cast a large number of ballots in favour of either the NPP or NDC in the general elections of 2024.
According to him, the seventh Parliament, for instance, passed over 100 laws but the current Parliament which is in its third year has passed less than 10 laws.
